Listed Species

"Listed Species"  is a regulatory term that broadly includes all species of animals and plants that are protected, monitored and managed under both federal and state law.  Endangered species are defined as species that are threatened with extinction. Threatened species are defined as those species that are likely to become endangered in the future.

Both the federal government and State of Texas list and regulate endangered and threatened species. In addition, the State of Texas also maintains a list of Rare species which includes numerous animals and plants that are monitored and studied, but are not-subject to specific regulatory requirements at this time. Endangered, threatened, and rare species have been grouped together and are collectively referred to as "listed species" for various regulatory purposes.

The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD)  has prepared and tabulated a list of listed species for each county in Texas and these lists are periodically updated. TPWD also compiles maps and data on ‘known locations’ of listed species which may be obtained through a formal request procedure.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) regulates activities in floodplains and requires that proposed projects in floodplains comply with the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA).  FEMA requires an expert evaluation and report on listed species for proposed projects in floodplains that require a Letter of Map Revision (LOMR) or a Conditional Letter of Map Revision (CLOMR). Project proponents must certify that that the proposed project will not adversely impact endangered species.
